[Never Brothers? Ukraine and Russia: A Post-Soviet Tragedy]

ANNA COLIN LEBEDEV

“We will never be brothers, not from the same motherland, nor the same mother,” wrote a Ukrainian poet in 2014, in diametric opposition to Putin’s talk of “unity.” Colin Lebedev traces the trajectories of these two societies in post-Soviet years. While the Soviet era led to close contact between the two societies, the differences have constantly deepened over the past 30 years.
