BOOK PRESENTATION

Irena Makaryk
(U of Ottawa, Canada)
Shakespeare in Ukraine: Mirror, Prism, Megaphone
(Toronto 2025)
The book explores how Shakespeare has shaped Ukraine’s cultural identity from the 18th century to today’s war, bridging Western values and powerfully amplifying Ukrainian voices on the global stage. Often regarded as a playwright “beyond nationality,” Shakespeare has played a central role in Ukraine’s cultural history over the past two centuries. His works have served as both a lens for exploring Ukraine’s historical and cultural identity and as a shared medium through which Ukrainian poets, dramatists, and theatre artists have communicated with the world.
Irena Makaryk, a co-founder of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies, is a Professor of English at the University of Ottawa. She was recently elected to the Royal Society of Canada and will be retiring at the end of the academic year after a long teaching career.
