When Artists Become Soldiers:
Cultural Production, and the Changing Character of War
The paper examines how military service reshapes artistic practice, authorship, and the representation of war, focusing on Ukrainian artists who have joined the military since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. In dominant art historical narratives, war art has been understood through models of distance and mediation, where artists function as observers embedded within institutional structures. In the Ukrainian context, this separation collapses. Artists are mobilized as part of society and participate directly in the war. Artistic practices therefore emerge not from observation, but from lived experience.
