National Democrats, Radical Nationalists, “
Russophones,” 1989-2025

The study follows three groups and their interactions over the period 1989 to 2025, that is, from the run-up to Ukrainian independence to the present, more than three years into the full-scale Russian invasion. The focus is on the polarization of identity politics in Ukraine, outlining the movement of the identity pendulum that swings between extremes and fails to find a center upon which it can come to rest.

John-Paul Himka is a Retired Professor of History at the University of Alberta (Canada).
