Landscapes at War: Aerial Vision and Environmental Violence
in the Russo-Ukrainian War: A Barrier to Post-War Reconstruction?
How are environments made visible in the background of war imagery, and what do they show us? Western publics have become accustomed to take a first-person perspective on conflicts delivered through the weapon’s point of view. These aerial imagery, however, captures not only intended military targets but also landscapes of all types—urban, rural, wild. Since 2022, one-third of Ukrainian land has been degraded.
