The Role of Civilians in the Reconstruction
of the Ukrainian Army:
How It Began in 2014

In 2014, aid networks, constituted by civilians, were created to support the military. Despite of a process of restructuration, the volunteers remained central in the operation of the armed forces. Based on direct observations conducted in the Donbas region, this paper explores how these informal dynamics led to a reconstruction of the army during the Donbas war.
