DANYLIW RESEARCH SEMINAR ON CONTEMPORARY UKRAINE

In the context of the Russian war of aggression and the terror-bombing of Ukrainian cities, the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Ottawa, with the support of the Wolodymyr George Danyliw Foundation, is launching a series of online seminars entirely devoted to Ukrainian doctoral students and scholars who are either currently in Ukraine or have become refugees since February 24, 2022.

 

The Danyliw Ukrainian Scholars in Times of War Seminar Series will take the form of periodic Zoom webinars. The inaugural session will be held on Friday April 8,

at 11 am ET/6 pm EET Ukraine. Subsequent sessions will be announced later in April.

 

The Seminar is open to a broad range of themes, such as personal experiences since the beginning of the war: life during war, humanitarian aid, human rights work, media activism, territorial defense, the complexities of caring for family and loved ones, conducting research under extreme conditions, etc.

 

Others may wish to explore the impact of the war on research in the social sciences and humanities, such as rethinking

 

• Identity politics, civil society, global security, the role of social media, etc.

• Ukrainian/Russian history, narratives, representations in literature, etc.

• How to approach Ukraine in Western academia and Slavic studies

• Documenting war crimes, gathering testimony, cultural preservation, etc.

 

Scholars, including doctoral students, are invited send a 300 word abstract, a 150 word biographical statement (not a CV, one paragraph), and a short statement explaining your situation since February 24, indicating your current city of residence to Dominique Arel at darel@uottawa.ca AND chairukr@gmail.com.

 

Since the Danyliw series will be ongoing, there is no proposal deadline per se, although we encourage interested scholars, including doctoral students, to apply as soon as possible.

Selected participants will be asked to deliver a 10-minute presentation and take part in the Q&A of a 90-minute webinar involving at least four speakers. No written paper will be required.

 

Participants will be offered a US $1000 honorarium. The Danyliw Foundation sees this initiative as an opportunity to financially support scholars in Ukraine who are living through the war.

 

The Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine ran for 15 years, between 2005-2019, before being interrupted by the pandemic. An in-person Seminar is planned for Fall 2022.

 

The Danyliw Foundation, the Danyliw Seminar Team, the Chair of Ukrainian Studies (faculty and students), with the support of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa, wish to express their unconditional solidarity with the people of Ukraine in their resistance against the Russian war of aggression, and condemn the systematic targeting of civilians, as well as of civilian, economic, historic and military infrastructure in Ukraine.
