DANYLIW RESEARCH SEMINAR ON CONTEMPORARY UKRAINE

After the 2022 full-scale Russian invasion, the military engagement of many citizens raised public interest and admiration. But the phenomenon actually began in 2014 during the Donbas War. Based on ethnographic research conducted in Severodonetsk, Lyman, Kherson and several other cities, the paper explores how civilians become soldiers and the challenges of reintegrating civilian life.
