Victoria Hudson explores the extent to which the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate should be considered a tool of Russian “soft power” in Ukraine within the pre and post Maidan contexts. Ukraine’s churches played a significant role during the Euromaidan, and it is hypothesized that the capacity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate to act as a pro-Russian public opinion leader was constrained by the need to present itself an authentically Ukrainian church.
